Is LightView Apartments the best dorm at Northeastern?
Students rated LightView Apartments a 3.6/5 stars. Here's what they had to say.
Like others have said, the only good part about LightView is the location and the view if you get high enough of a floor. The building management sucks, the laundry room sucks and only has 10-15 washers / dryers working at a time for the whole building. Even though it’s an apartment, you still have to sign in guests which is one of the main benefits of having your own apartment. Mail system sucks, takes 1-2 days for them to process unless you get lucky and dig through the pile of boxes as soon as it gets delivered. Just live in NEU housing.
Lightview is OK. It is competitively priced (compared to dorm housing) which is the target market for the building. Obviously you will find a cheaper alternative if you look to traditional off-campus housing on the hill or similar. Good: Wifi and ethernet is gigabit (fast), the lighting is excellent and on timers (I guess you could say too bright if you wanted to be picky). Appliances are all stainless steel LG, the kitchen is granite countertop. "Eh": Beds are commercial. There have been like five instances of hot water issues. Laundry is not free and it was advertised as free. Computer lab is three iMacs and one printer that constantly breaks. Walls are thin and you can hear neighbors and running water in pipes. Bad: The employees in sales lied during the signing process, and said there would NOT be mandatory sign-in at the front desk. I read the lease, pointed the obvious contradiction out, and they said to ignore it. Once moved in, they changed the policy. That is by far my biggest gripe. Additionally, the faux-leather couches stick to your skin and aren't comfy, and if they touch the walls, the paint comes off with them. The flooring is fake wood vinyl and not secured, so if your feet are sweaty, they lift up under your feet. My mail (including a tax return) has been opened twice by staff. This is a solid alternative for students whose parents prefer they be in a more secure, dorm-like building without all the additional complexities like utilities/wifi.
Everything constantly breaks. I have collectively gone over a week without hot water in my apartment within the first semester living there. They put me in a ADA compliant room despite none of us needing it and it’s smaller than all the other rooms but we pay same price. There are no kitchen tables in most apartments meaning you need to eat on low coffee tables at your couch. Many things were mislead. The computer lab turned into 3 iMacs. The free laundry became paid, the gym that was supposed to be a complete weight room and cardio center is barely better than a hotel gym (no bench or squat, light weights and treadmilll). Staff is needlessly rude at times. Paint started chipping off the rooms first week. Everything seems like it went to the lowest bidder. Nothing is of quality, lots of rushed work. My suite mates doors wasn’t even installed correctly (it’s hinge is entirely crooked so it makes a tone of noise). Avoid at all costs.
The locations is good. That’s it. Don’t be fooled by the nice marketing. The rooms are way smaller than they appear and the construction of the whole building was rushed and shoddy. You’re hearing everything through the walls. The worst part is management. They honestly don’t care once you have signed a lease. They have straight up lied to me when I brought up issues and refuse to make any changes that require effort or are a slight inconvenience. For example, with Covid the only thing they did was close down the amenities. The week before new residents were moving in, they finally took action.... by putting up a couple signs and hand sanitizer. Which I guess is better than nothing, but they can’t even be bothered to enforce their own policies. The leases are also very sketchy and they will change them on you and you’re basically forced to accept it. Recently they changed it so residents don’t have a right to the amenities anymore which makes the price you’re paying even more absurd. Laundry is constantly breaking down or charging you more than is displayed. Hot water running out is a common issue. I would not recommend this place. It’s “nice,” but not for the price or for the incompetent and deceitful management. The marketing is the best service they have
There were warning signs from the moment I moved in that the staff and building were not organized, and facilities were poorly managed. From preventing access to the elevators to rudely telling us off as we asked for our keys to the room (because we arrived at check-in exactly two minutes early), Lightview did not care. As all the other reviewers have already pointed out, they cut so many corners when putting the building together. If you leaned on any of the walls, the paint would scrape off. The doors to the rooms were not mounted correctly and in my one roommate's case he couldn't close his bedroom door without aggressively slamming it shut. Two of the the three sinks had leaks and it destroyed the fake wood paneling underneath. But the worst thing they did was double-dip on rent. We spent several months trying to get another group of four individuals to take over our leases. The building manager made excuses that out-of-area co-op requests had piled up, despite us making the re-lease request months prior. Come December's installment (a.k.a. the rent for the month of January) and we find out that not only would we not be getting that month prorated, but that because our new tenants moved in just a few days into January, we would be responsible for paying the January installment as well (rent for February). And the new tenants had to pay as well. If I had more than 1500 characters, I would provide more details but STAY AWAY!
