Is West Campus the best dorm at BU?
Students rated West Campus a 2.9/5 stars. Here's what they had to say.
ive lived in both a double and a single in claflin hall. doubles are fine, theres enough room for two people to live. the side of the building youre on really depends on your experience— if you face comm ave, you will have the worst heat at the beginning of the year. if you face the field, youll often have a cooler room at the expense of no direct sunlight. west campus has no ac, however in doubles you can control how much hot air comes into your room once the heat is on. the only pro of living in a single here is not having a roommate. the room is TINY. as in, it takes me five steps to go from the door to the window at the end of the room. you cant control your heat in a single, so i have been fighting between being too hot with the window closed and either being too cold or too annoyed by the noise when the windows open. thats another con to mention— for singles and for people facing comm ave, youre right above braves field way, or essentially a back alley filled with noise, car horns, garbage trucks, etc. my single is also directly above west campus dining hall, meaning i get to listen to their ac/hvac/whatever those fans are 24/7. my heater is also broken and have contacted maintenance multiple times for months to no response. in a single, you are also directly across the hall from a double, meaning you either have to be quiet most of the time or accept that other people will hear and listen in on your conversations and what youre doing, since the rooms are echoy and the doors hold back no sound.
The room was fine, nothing special. I did not like how busy it was because there were a lot of people that lived there.
West was very far from classes and the rest of campus so sometimes it was annoying having to walk really far. Overall, much better than Warren Towers and a good option for freshmen to live in. It's in a really good location with a dunkin, starbucks, Target, Starmarket, CVS and many other amenities and shops nearby. It's also close to FitRec, the school's gym, which is always a plus.
I lived in Claflin Hall (one of the three dorm buildings in west) during my sophomore year (2021-2022). The dorms in west are pretty comparable to those in Warren or The Towers except for the location. The dining hall is attached to Claflin and Sleeper which can be convenient but the food sucks (I am vegetarian so my experience was a bit limited). There are communal bathrooms that are cleaned daily so my floor was always pretty clean minus the globs of hair in the shower drains (wear shower shoes). There are no lounge spaces on every floor which I would've preferred. There aren't many laundry machines for the building so it is always a struggle to find any open ones. The mail room is located in Rich Hall so it is not connected to Claflin. As a sophomore living in a freshman dorm, I didn't like living there because I don't like the location of west campus in general and I also just wanted more space besides half of a room and I hated the dining hall. I would only recommend for maybe freshmen. This is actually my dorm room in the video at 2:42 https://youtu.be/niHTRf1Ga5g?t=162
I lived in a triple in Sleeper my freshman year and am currently living in a single in Rich. West Campus dorms are pretty standard freshman dorms. The rooms are fairly small, but I honestly spend most of my time out of the dorm, so it's fine. The communal bathrooms are fine and fairly clean, depending on who you're living with, but this year our bathroom only has two stalls; when my first year, we had three. No AC in the summer, so bring a fan, but it's totally fine in the winter. This year there's been a lot of plumbing issues that actually caused some ceiling tiles to fall, which is ridiculous considering the price. The dining hall is fine but definitely not great for what you pay. There are plenty of communal spaces in each building, in my opinion. Rich even has a pool room, and Rich and Claflin each have music rooms you can use to practice in. West is pretty far from most colleges besides the College of General Studies, College of Fine Arts, and the School of Hospitality, but the BUS is pretty efficient, and it's only a 20-30 minute walk to most classes in other buildings. If you have to pick West over Warren your freshman year, though, I'd 100% pick West, but I'd try to avoid it in the future.
