Is Third North the best dorm at NYU?
Students rated Third North a 3.5/5 stars. Here's what they had to say.
The walk was honestly a pro for me, 15 minutes isn't that bad, and you end up knowing New York just a little bit better because you're not confined to Washington Square, might be a pain convincing your friends who live closer to the main campus to come visit sometimes bc they are not used to the walk. The dining hall isn't amazing, but isn't horrible, it's pretty convenient, and if you get tired of it, there are so many other options. C3 (the basement area) is probably the best part of it, nice place to study/hang out. You will spend some time here, especially if you have friends that also live in Third North. Third North has a LOT of people, so if you have a social floor/group of friends, you will probably meet a lot of cool people, which is super fun, and because the dorms are apartment-style, there's more space for hosting, which is why pregames usually happen in Third North. BUT, because of the kitchen and dining hall situation, Third North is a hub of mice, my roommate and I were super clean, but our suitemates weren't so we suffered for that, it was traumatizing. The building is old and grimy, and the hallways reek, my room was so small that if I lay on my bed horizontally, my feet would be on my roommate's bed. All in all, not a great experience, but could potentially be a great one for you. Cleanliness is important to me, so seeing the bathroom and kitchen being grimy on move-in day, was already a no-no. The cons didn't outweigh the pros for me.
Unless you have a good roommate and/or a loft apartment your life will be miserable here. Rooms are shabby, poor space, lacks natural light. Kind of depressing to be honest. At least there's a dining hall.
Definitely one of the more social dorms but the rooms are really dull and depressing. Good to make friends tho. Ideally start off here and once you have a friend circle shift to lipton to live better
I was expecting my dorm life when I applied for 3N because it is one of the few dorms with kitchens. But unless you can guarantee a peaceful life in the dorm and a healthy relationship with your roommates, please do hesitate before you apply for this place, according to my true tragedy. First, little animals like cockroaches do exist inside the room. Second, elevators were always not in service and it took a million years for the ancient elevators to arrive at your floor and to the ground floor. Third, false alarms happened the most in this place and you will need to run out of the building and go to blocks away with only your pajamas and slippers--you're just lucky if you are not taking a shower. Lastly, dining hall is horrible if you are out of luck and in most times I am unlucky for getting burnt chicken breasts. However I did enjoy a lot from the activities held by Third North staffs or students, like free movies in the AMC across the street and handcrafts workshops. Also, there is a piano practice room and there are lots of study rooms that I spent most of time in, again, due to my tragic dorm life and terrible roommates. Activity space in the lower level was definitely my favorite space. Overall, 3 out of 5. If you are considering residential fee as one of the factors, 3N is not worth the price and definitely not the first choice.
I liked living in Third North! The building is old and not very special, but I spent most of my time in the lounge area. I was in low-cost housing and got placed in a bunk bedroom with bare space to walk between the bed and the desk. Third North is known for its rats and roaches so be careful. As an art student, the walk to the Barney building was only two blocks so it was very convenient for me. The FFIR, Carlos, is so nice and very welcoming. The dining was not the best but convenient at times. Breakfast was definitely the best meal. Security guards are mad strict and annoying but if you learn their names and talk with them for a bit you will definitely get on their good side. The lounge area is the best because you will meet a lot of friends and the 3N government meetings are fun and you can get free food.
