Is University Gateway the best dorm at USC?
Students rated University Gateway a 3.3/5 stars. Here's what they had to say.
The only thing good about gateway is that it’s right next to campus. The building sucks, management is trash complaining that I waste their time when they lose my package, and management keeps charging random fees. Over the summer they demanded me to move my roommates stuff and made me liable for any damage, when I tried to refuse they complained that I’m a waste of their time, when I’m paying 2400 a month just for a private room but management act like I owe them money. Last year in the same month homeless took shit in the elevator, so many false fire alarms at midnight (2 in the same day 3 days consecutively in the same week), WiFi stops working when the slightest rain drops. Mold randomly grows in bathroom, sink clogged and gotta admit the ceiling looks very trash.
It's a nice apartment, don't get me wrong. It has two bathrooms with the two bedrooms, and it has a microwave, stove, and oven. I think everything else about this apartment is a complete joke. Mold constantly grows in one of the bathrooms. Once we left our apartment, and one of the toilets just started overflowing for no reason. In the first semester, there has been nearly 10 false fire alarms ranging from 3:00 a.m. to work hours. I reported a cracked door hinge that was already here at the beginning of our move-in, and they still haven't fixed it. It's been several months. This month, hot water stopped working the entire day. There have been multiple instances of the water turning yellow. I don't even want to talk about the "amenities," or how you can't swim in a one foot deep pond, or how their coffee machine lacks half the ingredients, the fact that they only give free energy drinks, and.. that's about it. A simple calculation for the monthly rent per person (4 ppl per apartment) can easily prove the absolutely enormous amount of money that this apartment building earns every single month. Most people pay $1,300 a month so x 4 = 5,200. 5,200 x 61(number of rooms a floor) = 317,200. That x 7 for the number of floors, and you can see that 2,2 million dollars a month can earn you dangerous, often not hot water, broken door hinges, terrible bathrooms, no light in the living room, inferior quality amenities, and elevators that break down twice a week. If you use (some) Android phones or older iphone model, your Wi-Fi will constantly disconnect every few minutes. Do not live here.
Gateway has more cons than pros. The fire alarms are constantly going off (so annoying!!). The wifi always goes out when it rains and I get no service. Gateway is across from campus, which is convenient, but the overall area is not that safe (I got catcalled on Figueroa). The trash rooms are either clean or overflowing with trash (no in-between, and you can guess that it's never clean). The furniture is pretty mediocre, but it does the job I guess. They do have a 24 hour gym, 24 hour office space with printers, sun & soak deck, and study rooms on every floor. It's right above restaurants and CVS. They sometimes give out free food, but it's never enough for everyone (they run out in 20 minutes, so you better be quick!!).
A lot of homeless people around so be careful. there's a pool but it's not that good. don't fall for it. rooms are alright. bring lamps bc there are no lights basically.
This place will do. But, other than that this place is bad bruh. No lights so you have to bring your own lamps, the couches, and desks they provide are not it they are basically musty and broken. Fire alarm goes off super loud every now and then.
