NYU, or New York University, is a private research university located in New York City, United States.

Living on campus is not mandatory, except for students studying away at NYU-NYC from NYU-Shanghai or NYU-Abu Dhabi. The majority of the rooms available for students are shared, with less than 3% being private. Tandon first year residents are assigned to Brooklyn residence halls, while Manhattan-based school first year residents are assigned to Manhattan residence halls with no exceptions.  

NYU dorms come in a few different styles: triple in unit or studio, double in unit and double in studio, with or without kitchen inside depends on the building. NYU also offers lower cost options for students, such as 3 people living in a double. On-campus living is not a requirement but most commonly first-year students would choose to live in dorms.

Lipton Hall is a highly favored freshman dorm at NYU, celebrated for its prime location right on Washington Square Park and close proximity to most campus buildings. This dorm boasts spacious rooms with breathtaking views of iconic cityscapes, notably the Empire State Building for some lucky residents. While the rooms lack kitchens, Lipton compensates with a convenient, albeit health-conscious, dining hall in the building and a communal kitchen on the second floor. Reviews highlight modern amenities, including updated bathrooms and insta-worthy large windows. However, some downsides mentioned are occasional issues with air conditioning and hot water, and the absence of a social atmosphere within the dorm. Despite these minor hiccups, Lipton Hall remains a top choice for its cleanliness, security, and student-friendly facilities like study rooms, lounges, and special-interest community floors.

Third North offers a unique dorm experience for its residents, albeit with mixed reviews. The dorm features both traditional and loft-style living spaces, with the loft apartments being particularly spacious and popular among students. Common amenities include a dining hall, which receives varying feedback, and a basement area that is favored for its study and social spaces. The presence of a grocery store and other conveniences within or near the building add to its appeal. However, issues such as pest infestations and maintenance problems like peeling ceiling paint and unreliable elevators have been a concern. Security is strict, which some find reassuring, while others consider it a hassle. The dorm's social environment is vibrant, with numerous organized activities and a communal atmosphere that encourages friendships. Overall, Third North's appeal seems dependent on personal tolerance for its shortcomings and enthusiasm for its community and convenience features.
