Is Mary Markley Hall the best dorm at UMich?

Students rated Mary Markley Hall a 3.2/5 stars. Here's what they had to say.

Social dorm…. It’s what you make of it. My floor was dead as hell. We had a private bathroom but constantly had issues concerning roaches and other rust related issues, including the drain not working, the shower head falling off, etc. The floor bathroom is pretty nasty too, with hair clogged drains and rusty showers. Our dorm was pretty small compared to the newer ones, and the heat didn’t work. It gets really hot since there’s no AC, and the windows don’t open very far. Biggest complaint is that when living on the 3rd floor, since we’re next to the dirt area and the ground we constantly had pests. Mostly roaches but other insects and stuff constantly appeared in our dorm. Haunted me tbh. Also, If u full loft ur bed, I’d hit my head on the ceiling If I sat up too fast. The dining hall is okay at best, and the timing is inconvenient. You’ll eat most of your weekend meals at Mojo, but the walk isn’t too bad. The dorm is definitely what you make of it. Some of my friends had a great time, and some of my friends (including myself) had a not so great borderline terrible time here. Although the camaraderie with your roommates and potential floor mates make it fun.

If you have this dorm, be glad you're not living on north. It's a really good place to be if you come to U-M not knowing anyone. It's not close to central campus (15-20 minute walk) or as good as any of the quads, but at least you have your own caf, a few good studying areas, and a whole lot of people in the same shitty situation as you. The rooms are probably the smallest at U-M. Just remember, north campus would be much much worse. The hideaway is also a great perk (a studying area in the basement).

It is a smaller dorm but it is close to a lot of great areas on campus! You will meet a lot of other freshman

Markley is a great place to be for your freshman year. There are a ton of people in the dorm, and its probably the most social dorm on campus. Its proximity to central and north campus makes it great for all majors. It is close to frats/sororities if you are interested in rushing as well, or more generally the Michigan party scene. Yes the dorm itself sucks, and the rooms are bad, but I wouldn't have wanted to live anywhere else!

The people in Markley are the best friends you will ever meet, the rooms themselves could be a lot bigger and newer.
