Is McDonel Hall the best dorm at MSU?
Students rated McDonel Hall a 3.4/5 stars. Here's what they had to say.
In my 2 semesters living in McDonel, I killed over 20 roaches. Bring raid, and if you don’t like em, stay away.
My bathroom came with black grout from old age and some oh so pretty yellow tile. Not insufferable but not a great bathroom experience. The brachiopod fossils in the shower limestone is nice I guess. The room itself was exactly what you’d expect. Location was “eh”. Close to IM east and Akers dining is decent but not close to the better IM and the heart of campus and better dining options imo.
The dorm is suite-style, meaning that you'll be sharing a toilet, sink, and shower with another double room, so 3 other people (if your suitemates or roommates don't have a significant other). The bathroom can get kind of messy and gross if you don't maintain it. Also when you first move in or move back after a long period of time, let the water in the shower and sink run for a minute or so, it'll make the water less rusty(?).
Be ready to bring a fan and Raid for the fall because rooms do not have a/c unless you qualify for it and it will be hot for atleast the first couple of months, and my floor had roaches. Elevators break quite often but maintenance is not too far behind on anything. The double rooms were not spacious and did not look very cozy when empty but you can definitely make it more cozy with decorations. Laundry rooms at certain hours had many open machines but the water will make your clothes smell funky. There is no dining hall but there is a Spartys Market and a community style kitchen in the basement.
I actually loved living in McDonel. I lived on the 5th floor in East and my room was pretty spacious. Tall ceilings and good closet size (I basically brought my whole wardrobe and still fit everything) The bathroom wasn’t bad, it was relatively clean but it also depends on making good relations with your suitemates. My desk had actually pull out drawers in them which was super nice storage wise. There is 2 study rooms on each floor. And spaces the sit and study around the building too. There’s a decent Sparty’s in the building. It’s right across the street from Akers dinning hall, and in between Holmes grab and go food and Owen’s dinning hall. Location isn’t terrible, it’s a little far from some things but it’s easy to get around with the busses that come to the bus stop. Never had any problems with bugs or animals, however the elevator in east did break down quite a bit.
