Is Yakeley Hall the best dorm at MSU?
Students rated Yakeley Hall a 3.5/5 stars. Here's what they had to say.
Room was the size of a closet, radiator made lots of noise and worked OK at best in the winter, very hot dorm with small / skinny windows (will not fit a box fan well), smelled how you would imagine one of the oldest dorm buildings to smell, no elevator, small gym with nothing special, computer room was nice, laundry room was fine (start to learn when the peak laundry times are so you can actually get it done), if you have a guest they have to go all the way to the lobby for the restroom, since it is in a good location, expect a lot of partier / late night noise ALL WEEK, all the furniture is GARBAGE and ages old compared to all the newer dorms, have to walk to Landon to eat which is fine but Landon itself is sub par at best (me and my roommate would often play a game of looking at the menu and finding the weirdest thing they were serving that day), our room was right in front of the stairwell and....just use your imagination with that one (our door would also shake/rattle/‘slam’ into the frame whenever the stairwell door was opened), 33 bus stop right in front, but being the last stop on that part of the route always made it that during busy class times you had a pretty low chance of getting on the bus, if you had packages coming in it would sometimes take a day or two for them to “process” it and you wouldn’t be able to pick it up until they emailed you (even if you already knew the package was there), dinette got closed because of hooligans, and common areas were ok.
Yakeley is a older dorm with no elevator. I heard someone on the second floor had mice and they told maintenance about it and they set some traps. The girls emailed them again to get the traps replaced but maintenance ignored there emails and phone calls. The bathrooms when moving inn were horrible with dead bugs all around the sink. Also, we did not have hot water in the building for a few days because maintenance was replacing the system. Even after replacing the system the hot water was only getting lukewarm. One pro of Yakeley hall is the location. It’s close to grand River which has target and the bars .
I was worried about Yakeley at first, but I genuinely got so lucky to have that dorm. Community style bathroom is nice because you never have to wait for anyone to use the bathroom, also the older building style makes it very cozy and pretty. It’s the most perfect location in my opinion. Only downfalls is that the rooms aren’t huge and some rooms have really old flooring.
I absolutely loved living in Yakeley. The location is super convenient because it’s right by Grand River where you can do any shopping you need to. There is also a huge field in the front where people picnic, study, and tan. Inside Yakeley, there are great sun rooms, a huge study lounge and a super convenient gym in the basement. As for the room itself, I had a corner room with pretty spacious closets. My roommate and I were both able to keep our beds unlofted. My friends had normal rooms, and they still had plenty of space to live comfortably and have friends over! The community bathrooms are what you would expect for the age of the building, but they were cleaned frequently and the showers worked pretty well! I definitely recommend Yakeley!!
