Stony Brook University Freshman Dorms Ranked
Ranking the best sophomore dorms at Stony Brook University, according to students.
Number 5
Baruch Hall
based on 1 review
"The location is great as it's very close to West Dining, it's within a 10 min walk to the main buildings of the campus, and a lot of the buses stop right in front of the building. The bedrooms are a bit small. The living rooms in the suites are a nice size. The bathroom I think is the best part as it's great for multiple people. The lounges are a little bit depressing, but maybe because the building is quite old. There is also an elevator in the building. Not sure about the differences between all the buildings in the Kelly community though." - 2 years ago

"Whitman is not as nice as other dorms like the West apartments or yang hall, but it has A.C. since it is part of Roth. That alone was a pretty good deal for me. Also, all of the rooms are part of a 4/6/7 people suite. You get a bathroom for your suite, which is cleaned once every week. There's also a volleyball court right in front of the building." - 4 years ago

Wagner

"Building is old and run-down. Floors are covered in an ugly and dirty carpet that seems to be placed there just for the purpose of covering up stains. It is probably cleaned only once a year. Furniture is also stained and worn-down. Lighting is harsh, bright white (instead of soft yellow), making the whole ambience feel unwelcoming. You'll have your fans on full blast during the summer and your windows open all the way in the winter because you have no control over the temperature of your room.
On the plus side, it's close to west dining hall and the Roosevelt mailroom. Bathrooms are also clean." - 3 years ago2 student reviewers said they lived in Wagner during their freshman year

Keller College

"The Roosevelt quad is probably the worst freshman quad that you can get. However, Keller is the best one out of the quad. Its not too bad living there, its just there are better places and as you get seniority you'll get better dorm buildings. Boys bathrooms are filthy just because it is a public bathroom that the whole hall uses which is the main struggle. There are water fountains on every floor except the 2nd floor so you should keep a few reusable bottles with you so you don't have to keep going to the water fountain every time you want water. The exterior of the building looks very old but the interior is not bad. It also helps that West Side Dining is a 2 min walk away and there is a bus stop there as well. There is also a bike rental station in the center of the quad." - 2 years ago

Irving College

"It's one of the closer dorms to campus in Mendy Quad, is a cooking building, and also is where the mailroom is. The kitchens are OK and it can sometimes get crowded. The sinks can get very disgusting as well. The bathrooms and showers are alright but they offer almost zero privacy (there's separators but they really don't do much) and can get disgusting.
Unfortunately, no such thing as AC exists in this dorm and during summer it is literal torture. The staff also don't let people sleep in the longue where AC does exist. When it starts getting cooler, the heat turns on (and you don't get to control it) but there's only two settings that exist: off and 11. That heat makes 60F weather, normally very nice and very pleasant turn into torture again as the insides of the dorms heat up to 80-90F with high humidity. The one day where the heat did not work I wished that it kept not working since it was a actually livable temperature. It gets so bad that even in the winter months when it is 30F outside, the windows have to be open completely just to get the room down to a comfortable level. In my entire time here the windows were always open no matter the weather outside.
If I were you, I would bring 1 window fan (and have your roommate bring the other one) and set up a DYI HVAC system, one fan blowing in, the other blowing out, on opposite sides of the room if you want to live here comfortably.
So, main takeaway, good location, good amenities, terrible temperature." - 3 years ago3 student reviewers said they lived in Irving College during their freshman year
