Is Irving College the best dorm at Stony Brook?

Students rated Irving College a 3.4/5 stars. Here's what they had to say.

Irving College is close to East Side Dining, which is nice I guess even though the food isn't good there. But it is the closest freshman dorm to most of your classes and Wang Center. The rooms itself are what you would expect, but these rooms get REALLY HOT even over the winter because they blast the heat(Mostly the top floor of all freshman dorms). I would highly recommend bringing a fan(Because you can't bring an AC unit). When I was there, they were repurposing the end hall kitchens to more dorm rooms so there are no kitchens in the dorms, but the main lounge is pretty nice(with ac).

It's one of the closer dorms to campus in Mendy Quad, is a cooking building, and also is where the mailroom is. The kitchens are OK and it can sometimes get crowded. The sinks can get very disgusting as well. The bathrooms and showers are alright but they offer almost zero privacy (there's separators but they really don't do much) and can get disgusting. Unfortunately, no such thing as AC exists in this dorm and during summer it is literal torture. The staff also don't let people sleep in the longue where AC does exist. When it starts getting cooler, the heat turns on (and you don't get to control it) but there's only two settings that exist: off and 11. That heat makes 60F weather, normally very nice and very pleasant turn into torture again as the insides of the dorms heat up to 80-90F with high humidity. The one day where the heat did not work I wished that it kept not working since it was a actually livable temperature. It gets so bad that even in the winter months when it is 30F outside, the windows have to be open completely just to get the room down to a comfortable level. In my entire time here the windows were always open no matter the weather outside. If I were you, I would bring 1 window fan (and have your roommate bring the other one) and set up a DYI HVAC system, one fan blowing in, the other blowing out, on opposite sides of the room if you want to live here comfortably. So, main takeaway, good location, good amenities, terrible temperature.

The double rooms are a lot bigger than double rooms in Rosevelt community. Really close to East Side Dining, the food could be better but it is what it is. Located on the East side of the campus, 5 min walk to Library and core of campus. The biggest downside was the SBU102 class selection (2nd semester mandatory class).
