UMich Freshman Dorms Ranked

Ranking the freshman dorms at University of Michigan, according to students.

  • Number 5

    Alice Lloyd Hall

75% of student reviewers lived here when they were a freshmen

    based on 4 reviews

"Alice Lloyd has it all. The location is not too far from anywhere, the Hill is the *perfect* atmosphere to live in, and everyone says "Oh wow I wish I lived there" anytime it comes up.

This may be because I got lucky with a larger-than-average room for Alice and my friends got unlucky with a smaller-than-average room for Mojo, but my room is legitimately twice as large. That's not an exaggeration lol." See all 4 reviews

    South Quad

83% of student reviewers lived here when they were a freshmen

    based on 6 reviews

"Amenities based, its hard to beat 7th Huber. It is located above the main entrance making it a daily convenience and it has a two common rooms on this floor (none on six or eight). Overall 3.75/5. You might want to have a single in this building because the building contains 1800+ students and you can get overwhelmed very quickly that number of people. Brand new dining hall is cool, but since 1800 people live in the building, the best food goes quick. Location is only second to West quad. But it feels like the center of the campus universe. You will look back and enjoy the days you call south quad home." See all 6 reviews

  • Number 3

    Bursley Hall

71% of student reviewers lived here when they were a freshmen

    based on 7 reviews

"Bursley may have a notoriously negative perception relative to the other dorms, however, if you end up in Bursley don't be too bummed cuz there are actually many perks!

    Pros:
-On North Campus which is ideal for students with a lot of classes in the SMTD, STAMPS, CS/Engineering buildings
-Right next to the NCRB which is a newer recreational facility
-It's quieter and typically has less construction going on relative to Central Campus
-You'll get to catch wild animals like deer and raccoons in nature
    -Routes/trails for running
-You'll likely get to bond with roommates and hallmates - take advantage of communal spaces to make friends (like basement area is a good place to watch movies), can also consider joining the living communities
-There are frequent recitals and art events since SMTD students and events are concentrated on North Campus
-Walkable distance to grocery stores (Kroger, Way 1 Supermarket, and other restaurants)

    Cons:
-One of the older dorms - white lighting in halls (felt lowkey dungeon-like but you get used to it lol)
-Will likely need to bus to Central - most freshmen classes and activities are concentrated on Central Campus (bus stops are right outside the dorm, run frequently, and you can track them with the Michigan website/app however...buses can get very packed and dirty)
-Relative to Central Campus, you'll be further from downtown Ann Arbor
-There might be no AC :/

Sorry I don't have any good pictures but the ones on Google Maps/Images are very representative! " See all 7 reviews

    East Quad

100% of student reviewers lived here when they were a freshmen

    based on 7 reviews

"It's probably one of the best dorms out here. I think the food isn't the best but the location is perfect and it's clean. If you're in Ross then it's right next door. The only issue is there isn't a kitchen so it would be hard to cook on your own if you didn't buy a dining hall pass.

    p.s. I came from Jed's vid ;)" See all 7 reviews

    Mary Markley Hall at UMich

"Social dorm…. It’s what you make of it. My floor was dead as hell.

We had a private bathroom but constantly had issues concerning roaches and other rust related issues, including the drain not working, the shower head falling off, etc. The floor bathroom is pretty nasty too, with hair clogged drains and rusty showers.

Our dorm was pretty small compared to the newer ones, and the heat didn’t work. It gets really hot since there’s no AC, and the windows don’t open very far.

Biggest complaint is that when living on the 3rd floor, since we’re next to the dirt area and the ground we constantly had pests. Mostly roaches but other insects and stuff constantly appeared in our dorm. Haunted me tbh. Also, If u full loft ur bed, I’d hit my head on the ceiling If I sat up too fast.

The dining hall is okay at best, and the timing is inconvenient. You’ll eat most of your weekend meals at Mojo, but the walk isn’t too bad.

The dorm is definitely what you make of it. Some of my friends had a great time, and some of my friends (including myself) had a not so great borderline terrible time here. Although the camaraderie with your roommates and potential floor mates make it fun. " See all 8 reviews
