Is Sutherland Hall the best dorm at Pitt?

Students rated Sutherland Hall a 4/5 stars. Here's what they had to say.

Worst dorm, do not live in Sutherland if you are a social person. It’s a lot harder to make friends on lower campus, and it separates you from the rest of campus. Extra pay for dorms is not worth it, the rooms and bathrooms are all cinder block and room layout is weird. Overall would 1/10 recommend and lower campus freshman dorms are much better.

once you get over the hill, living in suthys is honestly great, you get a good sized room and quick access to perch and market the lobby is nicely renovated though the rooms are kinda old, I lived in an 8 person suite and my suitemates and I all got along well through the year, living on uppercampus def makes it annoying at times and shows its cons but the building itself is great

I really liked Sutherland, but it is a far walk from campus. I lived in an 8 person suite, which other than a bit of drama over the bathrooms was great. I made a few friends in that building, but most of mine were from lower campus, which was great because I had somewhere to go between classes without having to run back up the hill. The heat took a few days to fully kick in once it got cold, but then it worked fine. Both the East & West wings have laundry on the ground level. There’s two lounges on each floor, and elevators so you don’t always have to take the stairs. Upper campus mail & the QuickZone convenience store are in the lobby, and so is the Perch dining hall. There is a communal kitchen on the ground floor of the West wing.

Although Suthy is far from lower campus, the amenities are worth it. You share a semi-private bathroom with 5 people at most, the room sizes are nice, there is a public kitchen, you have the perch right in the same building, and a convience store as well as workout equipment if you don’t feel like going to the Pete. If you don’t mind factoring in an extra 10min to walk up/down the hill then I would definitely recommend Sutherland.

Great dorm to live in for your first year. It’s more luxurious than other Pitt dorms I’ve stayed in the past. Each floor holds at most 44 students which makes a pretty tight knit space. Also each floor is pretty simply laid out like you can never get lost, which is also why you could easily interact with others. The elevators are superior. There is a gym with weights, bars, machines, and mats. There is also a piano/table tennis rec room. The kitchen is always being used by students. There are 3 fridges in the kitchen for students as well (for west). Being near a fraternity never caused me any problems. Sometimes late at night you’ll see a deer outside the building.
