Is Alumni Residence Halls the best dorm at UConn?
Students rated Alumni Residence Halls a 4.3/5 stars. Here's what they had to say.
My opinion might be colored from where I came from freshman year. if you lived in North, Alumni probably seems pretty good. but coming from Buckley, it seemed like a downgrade in almost every way. The room are not small, but they are designed poorly. The physical wooden closets push into the room and limit floorpspace, the room isn't symmetrical in design. The internet was horrendous, although I think this was just in my part of the building. My roommate and I would get like 200 kbps sometimes, which is unacceptable in an academic living space. The bathrooms were by far the worst part. They were cramped, old, and honestly disgusting at times. Certain people would piss and puke on the floor almost every day. The problem is the floor is this speckled light brown/gray color with bumps that makes it really hard to see what you're stepping in. It pretty much just hides how gross the floor is. The showers are also terrible. There's no changing/drying areas or place to put things, but more improtant the two tiny stalls are connected for some reason. There's an open space underneathing the barrier, so expect splash damage from the other person. Just horrible. The only real plus is the location. The rooms are very close to the center of campus, especially now that the gym construction is gone. You also get fairly close access to both South and McMahon. The basketball court is also really nice when it finally gets warm out.
AMAZING LOCATION! Right near the center of campus and in between the two best dining halls. The gym and library are less than a 5-minute walk. There is a bus stop in front of Watson Hall. Also, Alumni isn't too far from Storrs Center which is nice when something from CVS or some food. As for the room itself, it's pretty standard. I think Alumni has the biggest or second biggest doubles on campus. I definitely recommend lofting your bed as that opens up a lot of space. The closets are large but there is no door which is a bummer but I just used a curtain to cover it. There are two common areas, both are large and clean. Landry is on the bottom floor of every hall and there are two elevators in each hall. The bathrooms are pretty average, nothing remarkable about them.
I loved living in Belden both during my freshman and sophomore years. The building had great study lounges and was in the perfect spot on campus, as it was close to Storrs Center, two dining halls and the center of campus. I will definitely miss and would recommend living in this part of campus to any looking to dorm on campus.
This review is for EDDY - I lived there from January 2020 - March 2020 and had a super nice experience. I kept my door and window open often so the room smelled clean and a lot of people came by and talked to me because people tend to be pretty friendly there. The laundry room is always a disaster. Sometimes the elevator smells weird. People tend to be pretty respectful of quiet hours on the 6th floor. Never used the lounge/common area. Super close to the gym and McMahon/South dining halls. There is no mailroom or kitchen in Eddy, you have to walk to Watson next door.
LOVE ALUMNI!! Belden is the best (BCLC!) and it is so close to everything you need on campus. The elevators are great especially on move-in day, and the location is amazing, especially compared to other standard Freshman locations. Maybe not the best location for STEM majors/classes, but other than that it is so close to the two best dining halls, it is near the center of campus/bookstore/Union/Library/School of Business/new Rec Center, and basically it is the best place to live as a Freshman. Werth is nice too, but Alumni gives you the true dorm feel in a great location, and the buildings are well maintained. Werth to me feels more like a hotel than a dorm. You can't go wrong in Alumni!
