"I liked living in Forbes; it houses the engineering (and innovation) LLC, so it was an excellent way to meet other engineers. My room was nice. I was fortunate, though, and got a corner room (which are a good bit bigger).
My room faced the alleyway behind Forbes, though, so there was little sunlight and not a great view (street-facing rooms get a LOT more sunlight).
We got semi-private half bathrooms (toilet and sink) that we shared with another double. Showers were communal.
There is a kitchenette, which is really just a sink, microwave, table, and chairs. There are two washers and two dryers on each floor. There is also a lounge space on each floor with chairs and a tv, along with a larger rec space on the second floor. The second floor has a lot of seating, a tv, many whiteboards, and some board games. There is also a workout room with a ping-pong table, pool table, exercise bikes, treadmills, and some other equipment; it's a very simple workout room, not anything crazy. There is also a grassy balcony with seating. Lastly, on the first floor is the mailroom.
The location of Forbes isn't perfect; it's on the edge of campus, so classes are more of a walk to classes than other dorms. As someone who wasn't yet comfortable in a city environment, it was a little scary to walk past shops and non-campus/non-student areas to get to classes, but you get over it quickly.

"The biggest complaint people make about tower b is the size of the rooms. My roommate and I drew a blueprint for how we would lay out the room and we utilized the space very well. It felt spacious and open, and our room was mostly where our friend group gathered. Sit down, try to plan, think outside the box for where to place desks/dressers.

The bathrooms felt more private than they initially seemed. There’s enough showers/stalls to accommodate the entire floor. Not everyone needs a bathroom at the same times you do. Every floor is cleaned often. Investing in a few pairs of shower shoes isn’t a bad idea though.

The thing I loved most about tower b was the communal feel. The scariest part of going to college is being thrown into a new environment not knowing anybody. It’s nice to be around people who feel the same way and get to know each other. Yes, you will come across people who are strange or loud or racist but you’ll likely have other people you’ll get along with. You quickly find yourself studying together, watching movies, drinking, eating meals, exploring Oakland and other neighborhoods, playing video games and board games... it happens so naturally when you spend so much time being physically close to these people. My dearest friendships to this day are the ones I made freshman year. Advice: don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.

"Lived in the honors college and there was a good mix of really nerdy kids and really outgoing ones. I would say don’t go random if you’re looking for a social life bc some of the kids are definitely anti-social (use facebook to find someone!). As for the actual building, it is definitely farther than the other freshman dorms from class but I personally did not mind it at all, you just have to allot more time to get to class. It also helps to keep me active and keep some of that freshman 15 weight off. The rooms are really big, private bathrooms are awesome, the floors are coed so you actually make friends with the opposite gender, the hallways are big enough to hang out in, there’s two lounges on every single floor, and the perch is right downstairs. Overall, Sutherland is perfectly designed to make friends on your floor and was a perfect place to live freshman year." See all 7 reviews

"Overall I wouldn't have chosen to live in another dorm! Everyone on my floor was super chill, and noise wasn't a huge problem. The room shape took a little bit of time to get used to, but as long as you and your roommate use the space well size definitely won't be a problem. I never had a problem with there not being enough showers but keep in mind that some people will treat the bathroom like crap, and it will get very gross sometimes. It was so convenient being right above Market also! I never had a problem with the elevator bc I lived on the 2nd floor, but keep in mind if you live on any higher floors that only 1/3 elevators stop on every floor, the other 2 stop on every third floor! There isn't any sort of kitchen area, and not every floor has a lounge." See all 8 reviews

"I live here now and I really love Holland! It wasn't on my list at all when picking housing, but I'm really happy here. Everyone complains about the lack of A/C, and that is annoying for the first few weeks, but after a while, it cools down and is very managable. Unlike towers, the rooms are spacious, too! One downside is you won't know the dimensions of your rooms until move-in (all the rooms are different sizes, complete luck!) but most have a lot of great features. My room has a walk-in closet, and I know people with their own private bathrooms. It's also right in the middle of the quad, so it's close to everything! Holland is amazing, I really recommend it.
