"The heating, when its supposed to be on, barely works and people even had mold problems. Overall the laundry machines there suck and good luck on getting the school on fixing it. It left a horrible smell on my clothes that lasted for months even after washing numerous times with other laundry machines at the school and at home. The kitchen is home to all residents who don't always care about the food they leave in. The lounge area was obviously made cheaply in the 70's which you can see in the furniture. Lots of people fall in the singular sofa chairs as it doesn't have good balance.

No A.C. for rest of the floor but the first floor does have A.C. and its freezing! It felt more like a bad summer camp dorm rather than somewhere you want to live. Not to mention all the bugs. The bathrooms are communal and it echo's easily so you can hear everything. You might wake up in the middle of a night just because people want to slam down the toilets. The beds are naturally hard so you need to bring something to make it softer. The beds are also too high or too low, like who were these beds even made for?" - 4 years ago

"I lived in one the buildings here (they’re all identical) my freshman year of college before the pandemic started, and I honestly think that it will probably be the worst place I will have ever lived. The layout of the building was good and fostered meeting people imo (4 floors, the basement and 1st floor had solid lounges, and then the top two floors were all dorms). However, the whole complex had the worst ant infestation I have ever seen (not to mention the occasional cockroach). I can not adequately describe how insane these ants were, you could not have any remnant of food out or else within the hour there would be literally hundreds/thousands of ants systematically swarming it. I even left my cleaned retainer out the first week and they crawled through the holes in the case, gross. They also once swarmed tissues I blew my nose with in the trash can, also gross. We tried setting out various ant traps, but they knew better somehow. This ant issue was characteristic of the complex and had been known about by previous classes as well. The other big issue was that there was no AC in the top two floors where people lived, which was not ideal for southern Virginia.

The good news is that as of 2021 they have apparently largely gotten ridden of the ant (and cockroach) problem, and they have also added AC to all levels! Even more exciting is that they officially announced a plan to eventually tear down the complex in the future (and build better housing, I believe)!! Even after solving its big issues, GGV is still kind of dingy. The buildings are a bit old and worn down. As for location, it really depends on what you like to do. A lot of people complained about it being a little far from most classes, but I liked that it was pretty close to Sadler, Caf (commons dining hall), and the rec center. W&M does not have a huge campus, so it’s hard to really be anything more than an ~15 min walk away from anything (unless you live in Ludwell).

Lastly, if you do end up living in one of these dorms do not fear! I made a lot of friends in my freshmen hall that I still hang out with as a college grad, and have a lot of good memories from my time living in GGV :)" - 2 years ago

    Gooch Hall

    based on 1 review

"Don't expect very high quality from a freshman dorm. When I arrived, I discovered that my window had a hole in it, which took weeks to fix. The bathroom is alright, but the trash tends to overflow, what with 18-ish people living on each floor. There's two lounges of decent quality and a kitchen.

Also notable: The entire Botetourt Complex is very far from most of campus. The only things it's *close* to are the Rec Center and the dining hall. Yates is a freshman dorm that's much closer to pretty much everything." - 4 years ago

    Willis Hall

"I lived here freshman year during the pandemic. Pros of the building/rooms: residents usually become very close friends, all rooms have window AC so, during the warmer months of the year, you shouldn't struggle too much. The hall is next to old campus so getting to most classes isn't a struggle. Cons are that the rooms are tiny. First-floor rooms tend to get a lot of ants and a couple roaches. While close to old campus, it is around a 10-15 minute walk to new campus so getting to caf, the library, business school, etc can be quite the walk.
Overall, the hall is fine, there are better freshman dorms and worse freshman dorms. " - 2 years ago
