UC Los Angeles Dorms Ranked

Ranking the best sophomore dorms at UC Los Angeles, according to students.

  • Number 10

    De Neve Gardenia

    based on 2 reviews

    De Neve Gardenia at UCLA

"Overall a good building to live in if you want a deluxe. Ended up here because my roommate and I wanted a deluxe double but the ones in sproul go fast.
    Pros:
-dorm rooms, bathrooms, trash room, stairs, and lounges are all clean but obviously also depend on your floormates
-dorm rooms are pretty spacious relative to other dorms
-location is much closer to westwood, frat row
    -elevators never break down
    -pretty close to campus
    -building feels and looks new
-since its on gayley, you dont have to drive up the hill during move in which saves a lot of time
-4 toilets and 4 showers which are enough 99% of the time

    Cons:
-not a lot of sunlight on the north facing rooms
-feels somewhat removed from the rest of the hill
-can get loud during the weekends because of frat row parties but mostly because of people. on the north side at least you don't really hear the music. tbh though I've never had an issue with noise
-laundry can be annoying since theres only 6 washing machines and two of them have been broken most of the year (but you can go to holly and do laundry there which tends to be better usually)

    other notes:
-I believe gardenia is not really a freshman building so not as social but still pretty active if you want it to be

    De Neve Holly

    based on 3 reviews

"Holly was overall a decent dorm, it is a newer building so good ventilation, AC, and heating compared to the older dorms. Big windows let lots of light in. A little bit cramped in the room but that's to be expected living in a triple, nothing unbearable. The only downside was the shared bathroom, you have to share the bathroom with the whole floor and it can get dirty/messy sometimes since it is cleaned only in the morning, so if a shared bathroom is a dealbreaker for you I wouldn't recommend living in Holly!" - 1 year ago

    Olympic Hall

    based on 9 reviews

    Olympic Hall at UCLA

"I love Olympic because it's new and modern. While it is further up the hill, I think the niceness of Olympic is worth the walk, plus it's a good workout. I like that it has really nice study areas (the canopy and understory) and I also love that there's an easy takeout food spot in the building (the drey). The one issue I have with the building is the elevator breaks like every couple weeks because there are so many residents (2 elevators for probably like 2000 people). Also, the air vents are hella dusty. But in general, I love olympic more than other dorms and I chose it again after my freshman year." - 1 year ago

    Palo Verde

    based on 1 review

    Palo Verde at UCLA

"Palo Verde was finished being built this past year in 2022 and it is one of the three new buildings in the Soutwest Apartment complexes alongside Laurel and Tipuana.

    General info:
    Room arangements: 4 bedroom / 8 person / 2 bath
Currently it's housing mostly for transfer students as of the 2022-2023 year but that may change in the future.

    Pros:
-The outside of the apartments and patio areas are very new and genuinely very beautiful. There's grills for events, plenty of seating, and lighting all throughout the night
-Plenty of restaurants and stores around
-Lots of events nearby including: movie premieres near the Fox Theatre, weekly Farmer's Market, monthly school event called "First Thursday" with music, activities, food etc.
-Next to Target, Whole Foods, Ralphs, and Trader Joes
-Study lounges downstairs that are very comfortable and convenient

    Cons:
-Currently because it's considered off campus housing there are no meal plans offered - may change in the future if UCLA decides to give meal plans again
-Roughly 20 minute walk to campus(there is a bus to get to school everyday)
-8 people in one apartment can be a lot
-Very hard to find parking nearby which means either driving around a long time to find something or getting a parking permit which is a few hundred dollars each quarter and you must park on campus

    Saxon Suites

    based on 7 reviews

    Saxon Suites at UCLA

    "and this for SAXON

Saxon Suites have two bedrooms, living room, private bathroom and shower. It was nice having a living room because you can work there and have friends over for movies and parties. I lived with 3 others so it was really relaxed we always had enough space and it was comfortable. I wish the sinks were bigger because they are really low and it can be annoying to use. I also kind of didn’t like the arrangement of my room one closet was so close to the desk that you have to squeeze to get by and the other closet is close to the door so if someone is using the closet the other can’t go out. Additionally, Saxon has bad lighting especially for the living room. So that was a con but otherwise i’d recommend!" - 1 year ago

    Rieber Terrace

    based on 6 reviews

"It was a nice and quiet building to live in (but keep in mind that I lived it in during my first year, so I didn't have much to compare it to). I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to first-years who are trying to socialize and make friends. There were only a total of 6 freshmen on my floor (those in my room and the room next door) and the rest were upperclassmen, transfers, and some exchange students. No one really talked to each other unless they knew you, so it was pretty dead socially. As someone who is more of an introvert, I was fine with this, but I do feel like I missed out on a lot by not being in one of the classic buildings with all the other freshmen. The actual room itself was much more spacious in comparison to the classic dorms (I definitely recommend watching YouTube tours to see what it's like). In terms of location, it's on top of the death stairs which makes it a pain to walk to but also puts it in close distance to a lot of dining halls/ takeout places (with Rende and Feast being the closest). It took me around 15 minutes to walk to Powell if I was in a hurry but usually 20-25 minutes if I was taking my time. They switched out the washing and drying machines for new ones my year (2019-2020), but for some reason, there were still a couple of them that would not work. Overall though, it was a pretty solid building, and I don't have many complaints." - 4 years ago

    De Neve Plaza

    based on 13 reviews

    De Neve Plaza at UCLA

"Cons: The building is very old, so it's not the most pleasing site or smell. The plaza triples are nice because you get your own bathroom but on the other hand it severely lacks socialization- dorms with communal bathrooms are the best for that and I ended up getting adopted as an honorary floor member at dykstra to have that type of friend group. I don't know if this last one should be a con but it's very close to de never dining hall, which means you will constantly eat there and it gets depressing. Food gets better the higher you go up the Hill.
Pros: I cannot stress this enough because this was the best part of it: It's the closest (alongside dykstra) to campus. You will be able to roll out of bed and go to class (in 10 minutes if you book it). Also, if you take clusters your freshman year you'll most likely have the class in one of the lecture halls inside de neve, which is again very good for rolling out of bed." - 4 years ago

    Holly Ridge

    based on 1 review

"I stayed in Gardenia and it was overall a pretty nice experience. The rooms are big, even for three people. The AC is a little funky (you can't set a temp, only colder or not) but still works well. The bathrooms are communal and there were some issues with flooding of the showers on my floor. It's kinda far away from food though, as you have to walk to either the main De Neve Plaza or BCafe/Cafe 1919. There aren't many laundry machines, so you have to be proactive about putting your laundry in during the week." - 4 years ago

    Cove and Landing

    based on 16 reviews

"Probably the best dorm you can get at UCLA for a communal style dorm. The bathrooms are new and clean, location is central to all food and closest to campus (20 min to macgowan) and the gym (less then 5 min). I had both a deluxe triple and a double here, and both were great experiences. Would totally recommend if you are a sophomore or junior as it is less socially active and just want a nice quiet dorm. I have seen people become friends with each other through floor activities so if that is your thing, that can happen too, but not as common as very "freshman" dorms.

Only negative was that the air conditioner would never turn off so it was always cold and dry. Room services will not fix it and they never replied or came to help. I assume there is actually no way to turn it completely off. (at least on my floor - some floors had different air conditioning buttons). " - 2 years ago

    Gayley Heights

    based on 4 reviews

    Gayley Heights at UCLA

"Pros: Gayley heights has prime location as it’s right across the street from Westwood village and it’s pretty close to campus. It has a lot of amenities like a nice study lounge in the lobby, a gym, and a good laundry unit. The apartments are brand new as well. Also the views are great.

Cons: Some rooms can be small and apartments almost all have either 6 or 8 people. This is fine for me because I like all my roommates but alot of people struggle with this. " - 1 year ago
