Guide to UC Berkeley's Dorms

The University of California, Berkeley is a public research university located in Berkeley, California.

Although each location is unique, all Berkeley residence halls include live-in staff, community centers, on-site laundry, easy transportation access, and much more. 

The south campus residence halls are conveniently located two blocks from the south side of campus and are traditionally residential halls in the urban heart of Berkeley. 

The northeast campus residence halls are located on the quieter northeastern side of campus, nested within the Berkeley hills. 

The Southeast Campus Residence Hall is Clark Kerr, a mini-neighborhood in a residential area six blocks southeast of the main campus. This is the farthest residential hall from campus. 

UC Berkeley also offers apartment housing options, conveniently located a few blocks south side of campus. However, undergraduate apartments are only available to transfer or continuing students, not first-year students.

Reviews highlight a vibrant social atmosphere, although the facilities show signs of age with maintenance issues like frequent elevator breakdowns and limited laundry facilities. The bathrooms, while generally clean, vary in upkeep, and the communal kitchens are small. Safety and noise at night are concerns. Nevertheless, many students appreciate the community spirit and convenience of Unit 3, making it a popular choice for those seeking a lively college experience near the campus core.

Unit 1 is highly praised for its prime location, being extremely close to campus, the dining hall Crossroads, and Telegraph Ave, making it a popular choice among students. The rooms vary in size, with options ranging from spacious doubles to tighter triples, all benefitting from large windows that let in ample natural light. Bathrooms are co-ed, with varying cleanliness and maintenance frequency, though some reported issues with cleanliness and water pressure. Social life varies by floor, with some being vibrant and others quieter. Unit 1 also features amenities such as laundry facilities, though many noted them to be insufficient and often out of service. Elevators frequently malfunction, which can be inconvenient. Overall, while the building shows signs of age and infrastructural problems, the community atmosphere and location make Unit 1 a noteworthy option for student housing.

Blackwell Hall, established in 2019, is highly regarded for its modern amenities and ideal location close to campus and dining venues. This dorm features comfortable double and spacious single rooms, all equipped with microwaves and fridges. Residents enjoy a variety of facilities including a private gym, study and social lounges, laundry on every floor, and gender-neutral bathrooms cleaned twice daily. Despite its popularity, some find it less social with a more apartment-like atmosphere, and noise can be an issue due to thin walls. The building’s dedication to cleanliness and safety services is appreciated, although the lack of accessible kitchens and the challenge of securing a spot as an underclassman are noted drawbacks. Overall, Blackwell Hall offers a premium living experience with its hotel-like vibe and extensive amenities, alongside a lively community if one is proactive in social engagements.
