Cornell University is an Ivy League research institution located in Ithaca, New York.

Cornell dorms are different based on the building. Most have a suite-style dorm set-up. First-year students are required to live on North Campus and aren’t able to pick their dorm room unless they apply to a program house. This is done to create a sense of community among the first years. Second-year students are also required to live on campus but are able to choose between North Campus, West Campus, and South Campus. This offers a wider choice of dorm room experience. Most upperclassmen live off campus but those who choose to remain on campus may apply to live in program houses, co-op houses, or live in certain buildings with allocated spaces for upperclassmen. Program houses are open for all, from first-years through seniors.

Despite being slightly outdated with no AC and minimal ceiling lighting, it compensates with a strong communal atmosphere. The dorm is often described as boisterous, with thin walls that carry sound and a constant buzz in the common rooms, which for many is a highlight, fostering lifelong friendships. It features amenities like a billiards room, a table tennis setup, and heartwarming 'Maggie Mondays' with a beloved dog. However, some students find the noise level challenging and the maintenance of shared spaces lacking. The gender-neutral bathrooms and the in-building library with air conditioning are notable, as well as the strategic location near campus facilities, making it a unique blend of convenience and vibrant social life.

Clara Dickson Hall, the largest freshman dorm at Cornell, offers a mixed experience primarily featuring single rooms with a notable emphasis on privacy, making it ideal for introverts. Despite its advantageous location in the heart of North Campus, the building struggles with some outdated amenities. Students note that bathrooms can often be unclean, and many report issues with inconsistent hot water and heating, especially concerning during colder months. Another frequent complaint is about the noise level due to thin walls and busy common areas. On the plus side, large closets and adequately sized rooms are appreciated, especially as most rooms don’t require extensive reconfigurations to manage personal belongings. Although its historical charm is notable, the aging infrastructure results in periodic maintenance issues like frequent fire alarms and inadequate laundry facilities. Socially, the hall’s numerous singles and planned communal spaces offer a good backdrop for making new friends, although some find it quiet. Security concerns have been raised due to lax measures in safeguarding resident’s possessions. Overall, Clara Dickson provides a reasonable option with a few drawbacks that are somewhat mitigated by its community atmosphere and location.
