McMahon Reviews

University of Connecticut

Reviews Summary

McMahon dorm is highly regarded for its prime location on campus, being just minutes away from key academic buildings like McHugh and Oak, and closely adjacent to the bookstore, Gampel Pavilion, Student Union, and the library. A standout feature of McMahon is its in-building dining hall, which conveniently offers late-night service, with the South dining hall also nearby. Students appreciate the large communal spaces available, including individual floor lounges, a silent study lounge, a Global lounge, and a game room, fostering a sense of community and providing ample study and relaxation areas. Elevators are available for ease of movement within the building. However, there are some drawbacks. The standard-sized rooms are considered small, though not smaller than most alternative dorm options. The laundry facilities on the south side have received negative marks for being dirty, often experiencing machine breakdowns, and instances of stolen clothes. The building is aged, which shows in its interior and sporadic maintenance needs. Importantly, McMahon lacks air conditioning, so it can get quite hot during warmer months. Despite these inconveniences, many students have a positive overall view of McMahon, making lifelong memories and affectionately dubbing it "McFam for life."

Lived in McMahon both freshman and sophomore year. Freshman year in a standard sized double and sophomore year in the corner rooms. I’d highly suggest trying to snag a corner room if you can as the huge space is definitely worth it. The pros of Mcm are its location, dining hall, laundry, and mailroom within the building, as well as multiple lounges available for studying and an elevator lounge on each floor. The cons of Mcm would definitely be the standard sized rooms, and the bathrooms depending on the floor you live on. The shower stalls are a bit of a plus as there’s a separate changing area, but it can get a little gross of your floor mates are not as clean. Overall a really great place to live and would spring for it if one has the cha...

Pros:
-Awesome location, within minutes of academic buildings like McHugh and Oak, as well as directly next to bookstore, Gampel, Student Union, and the library
-Dining hall within the building, that also serves late night, and South dining hall nearby
-Large communal areas like individual floor lounges, silent study lounge, Global lounge, and game room
-Elevator
-Doors on the shower stalls

Cons:
-Laundry room (south side) sucks. Dirty, more than one machine always broken, stolen clothes, etc
-Small rooms, but not smaller than most alternatives
-Dining hall is not very good (imo)
-Building is aged and it shows in interior and in things semi-frequently breaking
-No A/C

It was a pretty good dorm. Super close to the gym & two great dining halls (South & McMahon).

Rooms are pretty small but the location is great. Having a dining hall and laundry rooms in the same the same building are also great benefits to McMahon. No kitchen or air conditioning though. Can get pretty hot.

Best dorm location in the university, but dining hall is okay and there is late night. Dorms are okay but small.
