Northwest

"Northwest is probably the best area for Freshmen to live in. Anyone is allowed to live here but I feel like a lot of freshmen do. It's a 10 min walk from the center of campus which isn't bad at all. The rooms here are about 151 sq ft which is not that big but not too small. The desks in the room are perfect! Plus they have shelves attached to them which are so useful for decorations and storage. I was in Russell Hall, and the bathrooms were spacious and fairly clean, depending on who you're living with. Lofting/bunking is not permitted because the ceilings are low however, I bought bed risers to raise my bed to a good height. Also, Northwest has one of the better dining halls on campus!" Towers

"I honestly loved living in towers. It gets a bad rap but it’s a nice community with a great dining hall. The location kinda sucked for when you need to get anywhere on campus fast, but I really liked the dorm room. We got brand new furniture this year which was super nice. You get a desk, a 3 drawer dresser, and a little rolling nightstand thingy with 2 drawers. The rooms were actually pretty spacious (compared to places like North) with good sized closets and a big window. I also liked having the shelf inside the closet and the shelf attached to the outside of the closet which were super convenient for storage. The room will definitely be a lot more cramped if you don’t loft your bed. If you loft the bed and put your desk and dresser underneath, you will have sooo much more room. My only complaint about the dorm room is that my roommate and I’s ceiling tiles were constantly falling down which I’ve heard is a pretty common thing in Towers. The bathrooms were decent, at least in my bathroom there was one small shower with barely any room, and one larger shower with a whole separate changing area. The lounges were kind of nasty, I remember we found dead cockroaches under the couches- which are grimy and ripped- probably haven’t been cleaned ever." See all 8 reviews

"Lived here for a year as a freshman, then again as an RA my senior year.
*fun* facts:
- 52 beds + 1 RA per floor (Floors 2-6)
- 30 something beds + 1 RA first floor
- 2 elevators, slow af. One is faster than the other, I think something like 130 fps vs 125 fps
- water refilling stations on the basement level and an older one on floor 1
- 2 study rooms on the first floor, plus a patio that overlooks Mirror Lake, plus lots of couches
- patio closes/locks at 7
- basement is a lounge area that used to be a dining hall but no longer is. There’s still an industrial kitchen that is the home of UConn catering (Most people don’t even notice them bc they have their own section and entrance)
- Shippee used to be all girls way back when but now is not
- traditional doubles, or large doubles with a personal bathroom. There’s 1 single room on the 2nd floor that’s reserved for someone with special accommodations
- split into 3 sections: A=girls, B=boys, C=private bathroom so either gender (gender inclusive housing is in Alumni rn)
-wide hallways
-big windows
-can’t loft, but can bunk
-kitchen on floors 2-6 with a stove, microwave, and a sink. Related, lots of fire alarms.
- fairly clean, cleaned weekdays
- fun, large chalkboards on floors 1, 2, and 4
- no AC (Except study room or if you have accommodations for allergies or other) so 6th floor gets hella hot for 2 weeks before CT fall kicks in
- close to Storrs center
- fantastic community, honors, made my best friends, lost my" See all 8 reviewsNumber 2
North Campus

"North is not as bad as everyone makes it seem. The building itself is really old, but facilities and staff did a fantastic job of keeping it clean, at least in my building. The only concerns that I ever had with North is that during cold months like January and February, the heaters make a really infuriating sound (loud loud loud buzzing), and the fact that the laundry room is in a separate building is pretty annoying. Also, a note to future freshman, do not eat at North dining hall. It’s disgusting both food-wise and cleanliness-wise. You’re much better off at Northwest, which isn’t too far a walk, or even Towers if you want to trek up a hill. Another note- it’s known as “The Jungle” for a reason. The people on your floor and outside your window will be extremely loud, and since the walls are prettttty thin, you can hear every single thing they talk about. Invest in ear plugs! However, location is great for STEM majors, and you can get to the center of campus in about 7-8 minutes if you’re a fast walker. Bathroom situation is mediocre at best, with each one having four stalls, six sinks, and three showers. The showers are only separated by curtains in between and have a single drain for all three stalls, so just beware of that and try to snag the one furthest from the drain whenever possible. In my experience, the drains of both the showers and some of the sinks tend to clog as well. Best of luck to all future (or current) North residents! " See all 12 reviews

Buckley
Out of 14 Buckley reviews , 14 of them said they lived here as a freshmen

"Biggest doubles on campus and a dining hall directly downstairs. Hallways are a bit cramped. No AC, but a window fan will help you regulate your temperature. Bathrooms are usually clean with plenty of showers. Buckley Dining hall is okay, but suffers from a lack of options. If you don't like what they're serving for three main courses, you're out of luck and you have to go to South or Whitney. Location is garbage but they have a dedicated indoor bike room so it's really easy to get around campus if you have one. It's a few minutes by bike to the outer reaches of campus, and there's always the bus lines that usually take longer than just walking. The game room is a really nice perk, it just never seems to be open when I want it to be. There's also music practice rooms, so that's nice, if I played an instrument. I really haven't minded living here overall. I like the extra space, the community, the bike room, and even the design of the building. Sure, the walls are thin and everything (including a metal pipe for hanging clothes that pulled out of the wall) seems to be nearing it's intended life span, but it's perfectly serviceable for a freshman dorm. I'd recommend it, anything has to be better than Towers or Northwest, but if you can get into Werth, go there instead." See all 14 reviews
