Is Eastman Student Living Center the best dorm at University of Rochester?

Students rated Eastman Student Living Center a 2.5/5 stars. Here's what they had to say.

Disgusting living area. It’s a joke they make students live on campus for 3 years when the cost of living in Rochester is exceptionally cheaper than it is to dorm. The food is terrible. They dress up the halls to make Eastman appear beautiful to the public eye, but students know how bad it is.

Eastman doesn't tell you until you accept entrance into the school, but you are required to dorm with a meal plan (total of $8000/semester where you can easily live for under $2000/semester off campus). Dining center gives everyone food poisoning often, walls are thin, package room steals your packages, there is 1 kitchen in the whole 300 person building. Rooms are small. ~8 person shared bathrooms are cleaned weekly though and is right across the street from the school.

There are mice on the first four floors. The dining hall is absolutely disgusting and serves raw food. Very small rooms. Nice view from the upper floors.

Let’s be honest here. The bathrooms, depending on what floor of the tower you live in and who you live with on that floor determines how clean it will be. Though the bathrooms are cleaned everyday, having a floor mate who doesn’t flush the toilet after pooing or leaving piss all over the toilet seat is nasty asf. But at least for my floor the toilets and 1 of the showers work properly. The actual dorm room itself is fine. It can get extremely hot during the start of the school year bc they don’t act right, but during winter and snowy months I sometimes keep the window open and turn the fan on bc I like sleeping in the cold. The slc food ain’t that bad. Good breakfast, good lunch and dinner and snacks. Only get food that is from the grill and subway subs! If not you will get food poisoning. I’ve been getting the same 5 things, haven’t gotten sick once. Make sure to check your food for hair and other nasty things as they don’t clean the dc that much. We saw a rat down there the other day and a spider was hanging out around the sauce dispensers. The lounge on the tower floors are a great place to eat when you need to get away from people. Great to take naps too and just look out at esm. Looks amazing when it snows too. Just make sure to close both windows before sleeping. There was one day I woke up at like accidentally at 3 am and was freezing my ass off, never felt so cold before. Granted both my windows were open and the fan was on, but as soon as I stepped out that door. BOOM it was colder in the hallway than it was in my room, I walked around and looked at the lounge and saw both windows were wide open and it was raining with a cold harsh wind. It aside from that, the actual dc eating area is neglected most times. As I’m writing this I’m noticing that the dc workers are going on strike tomorrow and they wrote one eye opening thing; “it will be drastically dirtier than usual”. That’s ironic, I can’t even find a clean table to sit down at for lunch bc trash and crumbs are left everywhere. Make sure when you’re getting a drink from the machine that you let it run for a few seconds. This is because everyone’s drink comes out that same dispenser so there’s little black particles that are leftover in your drink if you don’t let it run. Laundry is basic, it’s free. Make sure you put a timer on your phone that ends 3-4 minutes before your cycle ends, if not an asshole WILL leave your damp cloths out from the dryer (you typically have to dry your cloths twice or for 90 mins to get them actually dry) and washer. Make sure not to leave your clothes or they’ll end up gone in a day or two. Orchestra pit used to be an actual place to eat and hang but now all the dc workers hang out in there which is weird and uncomfortable. Media lab is a great place to really lock in and do your papers. There’s an unwritten rule on our floor that you don’t go in the restroom when someone’s showering just cause the shower curtain doesn’t cover that much.
